Rockpress was engaged by Boeing to manufacture a series of complex aluminium prototype components within an extremely tight delivery schedule.
The challenge extended well beyond precision machining. Each component required multiple tightly controlled manufacturing and surface treatment stages, with additional machining required between finishing processes. Maintaining dimensional accuracy, surface integrity and specification compliance throughout each stage was critical, while the compressed project schedule left little room for delay or rework.
Rockpress developed and managed a coordinated manufacturing process that moved the components rapidly through each required operation.
The components were initially precision machined before undergoing anodising in accordance with MIL-PRF-8625. Following anodising, critical internal features were re-machined to remove the coating from specified areas and achieve the required final dimensions.
All exposed aluminium alloy surfaces created through the secondary machining operation then underwent chemical conversion treatment in accordance with MIL-DTL-5541, Type II, Class 3.
Following completion of the machining and surface treatment requirements, the components were laser engraved, inspected and assembled into completed prototype units ready for delivery to Boeing.
Careful coordination between machining, external processing, secondary machining, finishing, quality inspection and assembly was essential to maintaining the accelerated production schedule.
Rockpress successfully delivered the completed prototypes within Boeing’s demanding timeframe without compromising quality or specification requirements.
The project demonstrated Rockpress’s ability to manage complex manufacturing sequences where precision machining, specialised surface treatments, secondary operations and final assembly must work together seamlessly.
